Artist Interviews and a day with Miss Vermont

So today we were excited to host Alayna Westcom, the reigning Miss Vermont, who came to share her love of science with all of our 5th - 8th graders as part of our Skills4Life curriculum.   Her goal was to reset our stereotypes of both beauty queens and scientists - and judging by the enthusiastic questions she had about everything from the Miss America pageant to her desire to become a licensed medical examiner it seems she hit her mark.  Of course when you open your talk with the creation of "elephant toothpaste" from hydrogen peroxide, iodine and dish-soap you certainly have your audience at full attention.

Here are also a couple photos from her talks:

On Thursday afternoon I also had the opportunity to interview three of our eighth graders who are nearly complete with their first trimester Independent Arts and Citizenship cycle.   I'm so excited to see the final products that our talented students have been creating over the past ten weeks.  Hope you enjoy this sneak preview of some pieces that will go on display at our gallery on December 1st.

We have our first band and chorus concert this coming Tuesday - come out to the SCS gymatorium at 7 PM and I know you won't be disappointed by the great music from our Wind Ensemble, Symphonic Band and our Middle School Choruses.

Lastly - if you notice a bit more facial hair than usual around SCS and other CSSU schools - several of us have joined the Movember movement as part of the Mr. Moustachios team.

Our goal is to not only keep our faces warm as winter approaches - but raise some money and awareness for the causes of testicular and prostate cancer, mental health and physical exercise.  You can check out our team site at Movember - CSSU Mr. Moustachios
