Highlights from SCS Band / Chorus Performance Trip to Boston @scslearns

Boston Trip Highlights From Chorus Director Christina Kelsh

Last week our Concert Choir and Wind Ensemble traveled to Boston, MA for an exchange program.
Bus Selfies!

We began our tour Thursday by visiting a school in Carlisle, where we met and rehearsed with their middle school band and chorus, under the direction of Kevin Maier and Tara Callahan.  While we were there we listened to a professional musician talk given by trombonist Hans Bohn.  In the evening we checked into our hotel in downtown Boston, enjoyed dinner together and then went to a recital at the New England Conservatory.  On Friday we took a walking tour of the Freedom Trail, explored Faneuil Hall, and got a great view of Boston from the Prudential Center's Skywalk before returning to Carlisle to resume rehearsals in preparation for our joint concert.  The concert was a great success on Friday!

This was my first overnight trip with students. I couldn't have been more pleased with how things went or more proud of our SCS students.  Thank
you to all the parents, staff and administration who helped make this trip possible!

Freedom Trail Tour
One event was particularly moving, and I would like to share it here.We arrived late to the recital at New England Conservatory. We tried to sneak in unobtrusively, filing into the balcony during a break. The gospel ensemble coach, Nedelka Prescod, noticed us and after asking us a little about ourselves, invited the choir to sing for the audience. The
students were very excited to be asked, and chose to sing the traditional round, Dona Nobis Pacem.  They were even more excited when Ms. Prescod suggested they perform the  canon with the audience members.

The Wind Ensemble also had the tremendous opportunity to perform and rehearse with the talented middle school musicians from Carlisle Middle School.    It was exciting to see new friendships grow as they practiced and were able to spend time with each other.
SCS and Carlisle Combined Choirs
Personally speaking, this experience embodies all of what I hope for my students: the ability to connect with other people through shared musical experiences. The energy that was created in the room by singing Dona Nobis Pacem, which translates to "Give Us Peace", was truly inspiring and uplifting.

The video below shows our SCS choir students singing with members of the NEC audience.
