Red Ribbon Spirit Week Update

  • 4300 children die each year from underage drinking related causes.
  • The 3 most widely used drugs by both youth and adults are alcohol, prescription drugs and marijuana.
  • 66% of children who abuse prescription drugs get them from family or friends.
  • Children of parents who talk to their teens regularly about drugs are 42% less likely to use drugs than those who don’t; yet only a quarter of teens report having these conversations.

RED RIBBON WEEK is the oldest and largest drug prevention campaign in the nation and it happening October 23-31, 2016.  Here at Shelburne Community School the CY-LEAD group has been celebrating RRW this week by passing out red ribbons, reading “healthy choices” books to the younger grades during their library time, sponsoring a spirit week and a culminating middle school activity night.  Please partner with us and use this as your opportunity to get the ongoing conversation started with your child/children.  This year’s theme is YOLO (You Only Live Once), Be Drug Free.

Visit Connecting Youth or Red Ribbon Campaign to learn more about RED RIBBON WEEK and get tips for talking to your kids about drugs.
