Shelburne Community School SCS Geo Bee Championship - Recap
Thank you, AGAIN, to SCS students from grades 4 - 8 for participating in the 2019 National Geographic Bee at Shelburne Community School!
We have crowned a school champion:
Gabriel Nelson
With honors to our runners-up:
2nd place: Nolan Sandage
3rd place: Gretta White
Here is a quick recap:
After some complications due to a new format this year (the choice between verbal or written qualifying tests) there were 11 students from grades 4 through 8 who qualified for the SCS school championship:
5th Grade:
Ryan Nassar
6th Grade:
Anna Bloomberg
Caleb Greenslit
Nolan Sandage
7th Grade:
Will Kearney
Matthew Collette
Kody Guiterman
Gretta White
8th Grade:
Miranda Oppenheimer
Gabriel Nelson
Max Destito
Questions during the championship ranged from U.S. to world geography. Each round of questions was challenging and required skills in physical, political and map-based geography.
After several rounds of geography questions the field was ultimately narrowed to two students in a championship round: Gabriel Nelson and Nolan Sandage.
In a best-of-three question format, the two students were tied going into the final question:
National Geographic explorer Ricardo Moreno studies jaguars and human-jaguar conflict in places like Darien National Park, the largest national park in which Central American country?

Gabriel answered correctly (Panama) for a well-earned win!
Congratulations to all finalists, and great work to every student in SCS who was involved with the 2019 Geography Bee.
Looking ahead: for students who are interested in geography, join the SCS Geo Bee Club!
This meets on Fridays during middle school lunch (12:00 - 12:30) in Mr. Nelson’s classroom (on Winton). Each week students bring lunches and we play geography games, practice trivia, and prepare for the Vermont Geo Bee competition that happens in April.
The SCS Geo Bee Club is already underway so feel free to join us on Fridays!
