On Saturday February 16th 2019, approximately 80 students from 12 middle schools competed against each other for both team and individual honors during the 36th annual MATHCOUNTS Northwest Chapter Competition. The competition was held at the University of Vermont and was coordinated by the UVM College of Engineering and Mathematical Sciences (CEMS) and the Vermont Society of Professional Engineers (VSPE).
Co-coaches Devon Morrill and Lisa Phelps are happy to report that the SCS Mathcounts team placed third at the 36th annual Northwest Vermont chapter competition! SCS was represented by students from all three middle school teams and Anders E, Daniel Knight, Gabriel Nelson and Julia Shrier worked incredibly hard to score well together as a team. Lily O’Brien scored strongly as an individual and our team alternate. Additionally, as one of the top twelve students of the day, Gabe Nelson made it to the countdown round and progressed to the next level by answering questions under pressure correctly. Overall it was a very exciting day at UVM and we will now patiently await to hear whether we will compete in the state meet on March 9th. Attached are photos of the day!
According the MathCounts website “The MATHCOUNTS Competition Series is the only competition program of its kind, with live, in-person events in all 50 states, as well as U.S. territories and schools worldwide through the U.S. Department of Defense and State Department.” “The Competition Series is ideal for students who have a talent and passion for math who need to be challenged. Students will engage in exciting, "bee-style" contests in which they will compete against and alongside other bright, motivated students. At the local, state and national level, students win hundreds of thousands of dollars in scholarships and prizes every year.”
